Meher Afroze Chumki

Ms Meher Afroze Chumki is a born politician who has been elected as the Member of Parliament from the Constituency of 198 Gazipur-5 in General Election of 2014 for the 10th National Parliament of Bangladesh. She was also elected as Member of Parliament twice during 1996-2001 and 2009-2013. Her father, Late Mohammad Moizuddin was a Veteran Freedom Fighter and Ex Member of the Constituent Assembly of Bangladesh and Mother Bilquis Begum is a renowned Social Worker promoting Women Empowerment. She was given the charge of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs as Minister of State of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on 12 January 2014. She addresses the issues on the enhancement of the capacity of women. She also raises awareness of women on their political rights and self-respect. As a Minister of State for the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, she guides and supervises all the activities of this Ministry, Department of Women Affairs, Bangladesh Shishu Academy and Jatiya Mohila Sangstha.

Ms MeherAfroze has been elected as Chairperson of Commonwealth Women Affairs Minister’s Association. She is also a member of National Council for Women and Children Development (Honorable Prime Minister, Head of the Committee). She is the Chairperson of All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. Ms Chumki is also the Vice-Chairperson of All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on HIV/AIDS, Human Trafficking and Migration. She is the Vice-President of Children Welfare Council. She is also a Member of National AIDS Committee and World Peace Council. Ms Chumki is also playing an active role as Convener of the Sub-Committee on Gender Related Issues (Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development).

Ms Meher Afroze Chumki was the Minister of State for the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs in immediate past government. She was the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Women and Children Affairs. She was the President of Family Planning Association of Bangladesh, a member of the Syndicate of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and a Senate member of National University. She was a member of Bangladesh Olympic Association. She was also a member of Regional Executive Committee for South Asia Region of the IPPF.

Ms Chumki achieved an award from USAID for Social Work on AIDS. Her area of interest is social work, reading, sports and games. She was born on November 1, 1959. She got married to Mohammad Masudur Rahman and is blessed with two sons who are continuing their education in the USA. She maintained a very successful profile in her academic life. She graduated with Honors and did Masters in Botany from Dhaka University
